About the Retreat

This intensive is for those who are looking to explore their practice in new ways while relaxing and recharging. With twice daily practices and several workshops, this will be a chance to fully immerse yourself into an elevated learning environment. Irene will teach a variety of classes but the retreat will have a solid focus on handstands and contortion. While contortion can be a scary word, think of this as an exploration of deeper flexibility with a focus on building strength. There will be options for all levels, but this retreat is not for those new to yoga or movement. In between classes you can relax by the beach or pool, book an excursion or massage (additional fees apply), or take a short walk into town. There will also be a professional photographer available to capture photos. This intensive counts as 30 hours of continued education for teachers registered with Yoga Alliance if you attend all the classes.

*covid protocols will be updated closer to the start date of the retreat. Currently masks are required in common areas, but not while practicing.

This class is those of you looking to break down the fundamentals of deeper flexibility in a safe and sustainable way. We will focus mostly on backbends as well as leg and hip flexibility, and building the strength and awareness to support eventually going deeper. Expect a full body warm up, strength and conditioning exercises, flexibility work, and workshop style pose breakdown. All are welcome with an open mind! Those who wouldn’t consider themselves naturally flexible will learn new techniques, and those that are naturally flexible will learn how to create more stability in order to prevent injury. Options and suggestions for many different bodies! Class will be mildly heated.

Slow Flow and Meditation Friday May 31st 7:30-9pm

This class will begin with 75 minutes of movement- a slow flow that builds into a vinyasa that will leave you feeling both open and strong. There will be modifications for beginners and amplifications for those with more experience, such as options for deeper backbends and inversions. The last 15 minutes of class will be a guided meditation to gently bring you into deeper relaxation. All levels welcome.

Inversion Workshop Saturday June 1st 1-3pm

This workshop is focused on refining the foundation of your practice in order to build the strength and awareness to explore more advanced techniques. Irene will break down the stepping stones to a more graceful inversion and arm balance practice, starting with basic drills to build the strength and flexibility required to balance on your hands and upside down.

There will be some breakdown of headstand, but expect to focus on forearm stand and handstand- working on controlled entrances and exits, as well as learning how to safely fall. Don't worry, if you're not comfortable upside down Irene will give you steps to get there. All are welcome as long as you can do dolphin pose.

Liquid Spine: Backbends for Everyone Sunday June 2nd 1-3pm

Join Irene for this workshop to bend, twist, fold, and strengthen your body so that you can free the movement of your spine. Beginning with a discussion and meditation, you will be guided through Irene’s warm up sequence to break down different elements of spinal movement with a special focus on hip and shoulder flexibility. She will then show you her favorite drills for building spine strength and safely increasing your body’s range of motion.

All levels welcome with an open mind. This is also a perfect workshop for instructors looking for safe ways to help their students build stronger, safer backbends in their practice.

BACKBENDING + FLEXIBILITY April 27th 2-3:45pm

Bend, twist, fold, and strengthen your body so that you can move with ease. Irene will take you through her favorite daily warm up routine and share her tips and tricks to safely increase your range of motion. She will teach you specific drills to unlock tight parts of your body with a special focus on front body opening and back body strength. All  flexibility levels are invited. This workshop is for everyone.

Handstand + Forearmstand Workshop
10am-12pm $35 (both for $60)

This workshop is focused on using handstand and foreamstand as tools for self reflection. After an extensive flexibility warm up, Irene will take you through drills and skills specific to building the strength, awareness, and alignment necessary to balance upside down. This workshop will be mostly focused on creating straight lines, controlled entrances and exits (plus learning how to fall), and working up to pressing. You will leave this workshop with a plan of how to work toward your asana goals, as well as a deeper understanding of how your ego can relate to your practice.

Parts of this workshop will include partner work, and you will be asked to use your phone to take photos and/or videos so that you can check your alignment and increase your body awareness.

Prerequisite: helpful to have some familiarity with headstand

Advanced Flexibility Workshop
12:30pm-2:30pm $35 (both for $60)

This workshop is specifically for those with a consistent practice that are looking for ways to deepen flexibility in back bending, forward bending, and hip opening poses. Irene will share tips and tricks learned from circus performers, contortionists, and hand balancers in order to help you safely explore new depths. Irene will discuss how to evaluate your own anatomy and practice in order to balance your body with both stability and range of motion.

Expect to see things like flipping the grip in poses like bow and dancer, and bringing the feet to the head for cobra and eventually scorpion, hollow-backs, over splits, chest stands, and some partner stretching. This workshop will be catered to the group, but being somewhat comfortable in the splits is recommended (if you have questions, email Ireneinfo@fitqueenirene.com).

YIN FLEXIBILITY

This class will be focused on long holds of flexibility based poses to restructure and open the body. Most poses will be relatively mild with some options to go deeper depending on your body and your goals, with a focus on hips and shoulders.

HANDSTAND DRILLS

This workshop will be focused on the specific drills necessary to add handstands into your practice. Starting with a wrist and general flexibility warm up, we will move into core strengthening drills before moving to the wall for handstand specific training. Some work will be done with a partner but the majority of drills will be done on your own so that you can practice them at home! Starting with a wrist warm up, basic drills and assessing chaturanga and the poses that build strength, Irene will help you refine your technique. Next you will work on the flexibility and specific strength need to access arm balances ranging from crow to handstand. Expect to challenge yourself by trying new arm balances in a safe way, while learning what to work on in your daily practice. All levels welcome.

This all-levels practice will begin with mindful movement- a slow flow that builds into a vinyasa with modifications for beginners and amplifications for those with more experience. Irene will take time to break down specific parts of the practice in order to refine your foundation and understanding of your body, as well as show you some of her favorite drills. Expect to work on backbends and some inversions to take home pieces to add into your own practice. The last part of class will be a guided meditation to gently ease you into deeper relaxation. All levels welcome and encouraged to come!
